Caplan Family Environmental Education Series

Lakes Environmental Association offers outreach education programs throughout the year. The goal of our education series is to encourage a connection to place through explorations of the natural world. We believe that with a strong connection to place an interest in watershed stewardship naturally follows.

All events are free to LEA members, except where special program costs apply. Costs for non-members vary by program. We encourage you to let us know you will attend by calling 647-8580, though pre-registration is not required. To become a member, click here.

The Caplan Family Environmental Education Series at LEA is made possible through the generous support of Hu and Ray Caplan and their family. Dr. and Mrs. Caplan have been members and directors of LEA since the mid-1970’s. Dr. Caplan was the vice president of LEA’s Board of Directors from 1978-1980 and president from 1982-1990. Mrs. Caplan was the secretary from 1992-2006. The Caplans recognize the vital importance of education in all aspects of LEA’s work directed at protecting the Lake Region’s most important natural resources: the lakes and surrounding watersheds.

Holt Pond Guided Walks

The Holt Pond Preserve contains approximately 700 acres of wetlands, fields and forests that provide habitat for many of Maine’s plant and animal species. The guided walks encourage participants to develop sensory awareness and basic naturalist skills to explore and understand the Maine landscape. Whether you are new to Holt Pond or have walked the trails hundreds of times, your experience of this place will never be the same twice.

The Holt Pond Guided walks cover easy to moderate terrain over forest trails and boardwalks. The duration is usually around 2 hours. Comfortable walking shoes, water, a snack, and clothing appropriate for the season is recommended. For more information on the Holt Pond Preserve click here.

Fee: $5 per person contributions are appreciated; members attend free of charge.
