What You Can Do

There are many things you can do as a landowner to help keep our lakes clean. Even if you don’t live directly on the water, the actions that you take on your property can affect water quality. Building and construction projects without proper erosion control can easily add nutrients to lakes, ponds, wetlands and streams. Having lots of structures, driveways or other impervious surfaces adds to downstream runoff and flooding. Concentrated runoff carries nutrients to downstream waters and flooding results in unstable and erosion prone banks and shorelines. Clearing vegetation and smoothing the landscape also results in more runoff and warmer water temperatures. This all leads to ponds and lakes that are less clear and streams without native fish. However, there are actions you can take as a landowner to reduce water quality impacts from your property.
